Gerard Deulofeu, who came through La Masia but currently plays for Watford, has revealed that he felt "terrible" when people referred to him as "the new Messi". In an interview with the 'Watford Observer' he also ruled out ever returning to Barcelona after twice trying - and failing - to establish himself at his childhood team.
Deulofeu said this on the comparisons with Messi: "That was difficult - when I was young it was terrible, every day in the media you are the 'new Messi' - and that's not good for a young player."
And on a potential return to the Camp Nou in the future, Deulofeu was clear. "I'm a former Barcelona player but maybe my style is more similar style to that of a Real Madrid or Manchester City player."
Deulofeu also admitted that he didn't want to stay at Barcelona this summer. "I didn't take the chance of staying at Barcelona because playing there is so difficult and sometimes I didn't have the chance or the confidence of Barcelona. But I'm here at Watford and I'm still young."
The winger knows that he must now look forward to how things work out with Watford, who currently sit in seventh position in the Premier League, rather than a move elsewhere. "I said I will not come back to Barcelona. We tried two times and if on those two occasions it didn't work, I don't want to try a third time. It's too hard."
Perhaps surprisingly, despite being at FC Barcelona from a young age, he never felt like the club was 'home'. "I'd been at Barcelona since I was nine years old but sometimes you don't feel it's home. That's why I don't want to go back."
"Now it's one year since I left Barcelona so it's normal I don't want to be there. My best football is in the Premier League and Watford put a lot of confidence in me."

No offence but he's never been good enough for Barca. Watched him at Everton and Watford. He literally bring nothing to the table that a Barca player would. Just your general winger. I understand he feels upset about being discarded by Barca but many quality players get discarded by Barca and Madrid. I mean look at James, he's pretty much been put on loan forever, Ozil and Di Maria got thrown away, Traore is struggling after being sent off, Mina had a fantastic world cup and now plays in a mid table level team. The La Liga giants are just those kind of teams.. look on the bright side, if you were a Chelsea you you'd probably be on loan for 5 years followed by time in like the championship so be glad at least Barca sold you off to a premiership side...
