Gianluigi Donnarumma has opened up about his competition with former Paris Saint-Germain teammate Keylor Navas in a recent interview with L’Équipe. The Italian goalkeeper, who arrived at PSG during the 2021 offseason from AC Milan, spoke about the challenges he faced last season when both he and Navas were rotating in the starting role under former coach Mauricio Pochettino.

However, with the arrival of new coach Christophe Galtier, Donnarumma now holds the starting position and is grateful for the clarity and trust from his coach. Despite the competition between the two goalkeepers, Donnarumma emphasized that they have always had a good relationship, but he acknowledged that the situation was not always easy to manage.

“For me, last season helped me to grow enormously, precisely because of these difficulties. It was an experience that helped me, I lived it like that. This year, the Mister (Christophe Galtier) has given a clear hierarchy, and I thank him for his confidence. It’s normal to make choices at some point. And we had to make a choice, it was him or me, it was important for everyone. Last year, the important thing was to try to be ready every time I played. I took it like that, even if it’s difficult, it’s an extra experience that helps you, especially when you are young.”

Donnarumma also mentioned that he is happy to see Navas excel in his new role at Nottingham Forest and believes that the competition with Navas has only made him a better player.
