Donnarumma's fatal mistake for PSG - he's overconfident & lacks technical skill

There is a feeling in Italy, particularly among AC Milan fans that Wednesday night served as retribution for Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The PSG goalkeeper, who departed on a free transfer from the San Siro, endured one of the worst games of his career under one of the brightest spotlights.

His mistake allowed Real Madrid a toe-hold back in the game, dithering in possession and allowing Vinicius to feed Karim Benzema for the first of his hat-trick.

Donnarumma's move to PSG was seen as a betrayal in Italy and his display on Wednesday means the perception of him as infallible in some quarters is changing.

The blunder contributed to the downfall of yet another Champions League dream for PSG, who have spent more money than any club in the transfer market over the last five years.

The mistake was not a technical error but was indicative of his overconfidence and suggests he has lost the humility required to be a top player.

It is highly likely that Benzema had studied the keeper's weaknesses, knowing full well that he has issues with his feet.

He is an old fashioned kind of stopper, without the modern advancement of technical play from the back.

Many PSG fans are calling for Keylor Navas to return to the starting line-up for Mauricio Pochettino's side.

The Argentine will now have his work cut out to build the 23-year-old's confidence back up.

In Italy, Donnarumma never paid too much attention to his technical limitations with the ball at his feet but overlooking such weakness has now cost PSG dearly.

Dino Zoff, Gianluigi Buffon, Angelo Peruzzi and Francesco Toldo would have launched the ball over the halfway line.

Donnarumma made the worst possible choice, arrogantly trying to play his way out of trouble and exposing his inexperience.

The goalkeeper helped lead Italy to the European Championship and won player of the tournament but self-assurance cost him at club level.

Perhaps the pressure with persistent questions to Pochettino about Donnarumma's place in the side led to the wrong decision in choosing to play him ahead of Navas.

In the post-match analysis, Fabio Capello said: 'When my teams relaxed I got very angry.

'I don't know how Donnarumma will now live these days in Paris, but he is to blame for the elimination. Real was dead, they have been awakened.'

His mistake was the major momentum shift in the game and from then on, Real won every duel in the middle of the pitch, creating chances at will.

It will be difficult for Donnarumma to move on from this and there must be an inevitable confrontation with his manager to better manage his emotions.
