Eight players could miss Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid as Cody Gakpo absent from training

Liverpool will be without several key players when they take on Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night, with injuries and squad decisions set to limit both sides

Liverpool will have several players unavailable when they face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League this week. The La Liga outfit, likewise, will also have some players on the sidelines when they make the trip to Anfield.

Andoni Iraola oversaw his first win as Liverpool boss last week, with the Merseyside outfit securing a 2-0 victory away at Ipswich Town in the Premier League, with Alexander Isak scoring both goals at Portman Road.

Iraola and Liverpool have seen several members of their squad be unavailable in the early weeks of the season, and that will still be the case when they face Atletico in Europe on Wednesday evening.

Cody Gakpo is an doubt for Liverpool after the Netherlands international missed training on Tuesday, although his absence was understood to be as a precaution rather than something which will definitely rule him out.

Hugo Ekitike remains a long-term absentee for Liverpool as he continues his recovery from a serious Achilles' injury sustained back in April.

Joe Gomez has also been sidelined after picking up a hamstring injury during the opening minutes of the club's first pre-season fixture of the summer, though he is closing in on a return.

Liverpool will further be without Conor Bradley, another long-term absentee for Iraola, with the right-back nursing a knee injury he suffered back in January.

Giovanni Leoni will also be absent, as he enters the final stages of his rehabilitation from a knee injury he sustained back in September last year.

Federico Chiesa is yet to make an appearance for Liverpool this season, with the Italy international also omitted from the Reds' Champions League squad, while Wataru Endo finds himself not available for the same reasons.

Diego Simeone will also be dealing with a number of injury concerns when he leads his Atletico Madrid side to Merseyside this week.

Striker Alexander Sorloth looks set to miss out for the La Liga giants, sidelined with a muscle complaint that has kept him out of action.

Atletico will further be deprived of Arnau Ortiz, who faces a suspension following a red card in his last European appearance, which came back in August 2024 during a UEFA Conference League qualifying match.
