Chelsea transfer news: Enzo Fernandez may have hinted at a move for Moises Caicedo with his activity on social media.

The World Cup winner joined the Blues in January on deadline day, with the west London outfit paying a club-record and British record transfer fee of roughly £106.5million. The 22-year-old showed plenty of promise in the few months he was at Benfica, going on to win young player of the tournament in the winter World Cup.

Fernandez went on to impress in the second half of the season, despite the side struggling on their way towards a 12th-placed finish in the Premier League. The Argentina international was, however, playing at the base of the midfield, where his ability may be better suited to a more advanced role.

"My personal view with Enzo is that he can probably play in all the midfield roles, but seeing him train and play, I get the feeling from him that he has more to offer than as a single number six," interim manager Frank Lampard said earlier this year. "He can play as a double number six or as a number eight where he can join into the game more."

One of those that has been linked is Moises Caicedo, who can play in the deeper role as well as a host of other positions, as shown in his time with Brighton so far. football.london understands that the Ecuadorian international has been a top target for the Blues this summer.

However, recent reports have suggested a £100million price tag has stalled proceedings and the west London outfit are yet to add the midfielder to their ranks. Fernandez may have hinted at his desire for a new partner in the central areas by liking a post on his Twitter account.

He liked a post from TheBlueDodger that said: "It would be a travesty if we didn't give Enzo Fernandez a proper platform to play his best game after spending so much getting him in. As good as some have been next to him, more is needed for the Premier League."

It remains to be seen whether the hierarchy will make a swift move to fix that issue and help Fernandez progress in his role, but time is ticking with the season approaching fast.
