Espanyol succumbed to a 1-1 draw at home to Ferencvaros in their Europa League group stage opener in a match that saw Los Periquitos begin the game very poorly before showing more signs of promise in the second half.
On paper, Ferencvaros are the worst of the four teams in Espanyol's group, yet the Hungarians were able to come away from the RCDE Stadium with a point.
Javi Lopez scored a comical own goal 10 minutes into the contest, converting a Ferencvaros cross past Diego Lopez, while the away team almost made it 2-0 with a free-kick that almost caught out the Espanyol goalkeeper in the 51st minute.
Matias 'Monito' Vargas rescued a point for the hosts on the hour mark as a long, hopeful ball was headed towards the Ferencvaros goal by the Argentine, who made sure the parried effort crossed the line at the second time of asking.
As was the case against Eibar, the introduction of Adria Pedrosa gave Espanyol another level going forward. The Catalans almost grabbed a winner 12 minutes from time, too, but Esteban Granero's left-footed effort hit the woodwork.
