FC Barcelona to host the Joan Gamper at Montjuïc for the third time in history

FC Barcelona are set to take on Tottenham Hotspur, one of the best teams in the Premier League, tomorrow for the Joan Gamper trophy. It will only be the third time that this event has been held at the Montjuïc Olympic stadium, Lluís Companys, which will also be Barça's new home for about a year and a half.

Turf change in 1990 and 1996 forced the team out of Camp Nou, bringing them to Montjuïc. Those two editions ended with Barça lifting the title.

In 1990, the tournament was played by four teams who played each other in the semi-finals and then the final. Barça won the 25th edition of the tournament, beating Spartak Moscow in the semi-finals with a single goal from Bakero (1-0) and beating Anderlecht in the final with goals from Koeman, Begiristain and Stoichkov.

1996 was coincidentally the last edition in which four teams would play in the tournament. San Lorenzo of Argentina, Anderlecht and Inter Milan were the last teams to play in the competition under the old format.

FC Barcelona, coached by Sir Bobby Robson, beat San Lorenzo in the semi-finals with goals from Giovanni Silva and Pizzi (2-0). The trophy stayed at home after Barça defeated Inter Milan with goals from Guardiola and Pizzi. Ganz would score the only goal for the Italians.
