Legendary former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly held talks with Kalidou Koulibaly over a possible transfer last summer.

Ferguson, who now works for United as a director and club ambassador, was eager for United to sign the Napoli centre-back.

United were heavily linked with Koulibaly but the deal ultimately didn't come to fruition.

As reported by Foot Mercato, Ferguson was eager for the Senegal international to make the switch to Old Trafford.

United eventually gave up on the Koulibaly deal and instead turned to Harry Maguire, who joined from Leicester for £80million.

On Friday Maguire was named United's club captain, succeeding Ashley Young, who has joined Inter Milan.

Koulibaly has made 232 appearances for Napoli since he joined the club in 2014.
