According to Mundo Deportivo, the former Real Madrid star is the preferred choice of the president, who likes his character and tactical nous.
The fallout may have intensified at Real Madrid following the Parisien embarrassment on Wednesday evening, however, this is something that has been rumbling for some time. Zinedine Zidane's position, even this early in the new campaign, is on thin ice, and another former Bernabéu star is being eyed as his successor, according to Mundo Deportivo.
Could Alonso sub on for Zidane?
The 3-0 Champions League defeat to a weakened PSG highlighted much of what is wrong with this current Madrid side. Individual mistakes can happen, injuries and lack of match sharpness can play their part, but it was the lack of collective responsibility and organisation that stood out for much of the game. These aspects tend to find blame in the coaching area, something fans have made clear. What made matters worse was that two of the missing stars for the hosts, who Florentino Pérez had wanted for Zidane's post-Cristiano Ronaldo revolution, were fully enjoying the moment in the stands.
Los Blancos' president plays a huge role at the club on various levels, and that includes his involvement in making player signings, not just the cheque writing but also the decision making. His plan was to buy up the great young talent and sprinkle them with a Galáctico or two. This is yet to pay dividends.
It was as early as the pre-season that Florentino began to realise Zidane may not be the man to take the team forward. The French coach had performed miracles in the Champions League during his first spell - although the questions then from some that it was more about a brave team being favoured by some fortune are now gathering pace - but he has not been able to deal with the squad issues that he came back to solve.
Florentino now has a decision to make. Continue with Zidane, give him the chance to get the best out of his new recruits once they have bedded in (a convincing victory over LaLiga leaders Sevilla this weekend would help reignite that option) or look to bring in someone he trusts more. According to Mundo, the president told one of his relatives that the club made a mistake by letting Xabi Alonso go (from Castilla to Real Sociedad), and that he is the preferred one to take over, more so than Raúl who is developing with Madrid's B team. It is said that Pérez sees Alonso as having more character and greater tactical nous.
There is another point made, however, one that has been simmering in the rumour mill but with few believing it would ever come to the boil following events over recent years. A plan to bring in what is described as the 'anti-Messi antidote', José Mourinho.

I always blame Perez.. In Madrid Perez choose to buy and sell any player of his choice with the idea of the Manager or not. You sell a Whole No#1 in the world and u expect your team to be as it is..it can be but not now.

Zidane is a great couch but it takes time to rebuild a team. Some may say klopp is an alternative option but look how many years he needed to make Liverpool great again. His squad is old and tired

Employing xabi Alonso is a wast of financial resources due to risk of inexperienced. Rather, Real Madrid needs tested experienced technical coach who will impose his authority on players. The present players have over achieved they need a new era, new challenges, new pages of life, new stories to tell. They need new visionary leadership coach like Klopp, Tottenham coach pochettino. The coach who will tell his players what he wants and move them from their comfort zone to new challenges.

What Madrid needs now is total team overhaul, not bringing in fresh legs and pair them with those aging midfield and defense, Zidane should quit his sentimental approach. preferring certain players ahead of the prospective lads, Perez should identity the management issues, sacking is not always the best. we need a team manager like Klopp and not a Coach, Zidane is a coach

Real Madrid prime issue now is with the President of the club. His actions are highly dictatorial, causing serious instability for the club. Ronaldo exit was the beginning of this mess, and he continue playing the role of the Manager. Real Madrid in its wholeness will have to decisively move take some unavoidable actions to save the team.

To be fair, Xabi Alonso may actually be a more intelligent coach cos players that play where he did often get a view of all angles of the pitch so tactical set up becomes clearer as to which is more advantageous.... I rate Xabi Alonso as probably the best DM in history in terms of intelligence and reading of the game as well as setting the tempo... I'd back him to do better than Zidane has this year.

Ridiculous news. Perez should listen to Zidane and his suggestions. Zidane was the one who brought us UCL cup. People may say it was because of Ronaldo, but Ronaldo was there under Mourinho as well. We finished 15 points behind Barca and no trophy at all in Mourinho's last year with us. Bringing Xavi or even Ancelotti is not going to help till we sort our midfield problem.

Who doesn't know that Zizu was reengaged to deflect pressure away from Perez. We also know that at the right time, he would be dumped again. He made a silly mistake going back there even when Man U were waving olive branch to him
