Font: Xavi's dream is to coach Barcelona, so he'll do it when the club need him

Xavi Hernandez's name has been linked to Victor Font's presidential campaign ahead of Barcelona's elections for quite some time.

The former midfielder is someone that a number of the candidates have tried to tie themselves to and Font insists that, sooner or later, he will make a return to the Camp Nou.

"Xavi's dream is to be a coach," Font said. "We want Xavi to be the person in charge of the football structure.

"He will have enough power to make important decisions. He's clear that his dream is to be a coach, so as soon as the club need him in that position, it will happen."

Font's ties to Xavi and Jordi Cruyff have been known for quite a while, with rumours even surfacing recently reporting that the Spaniard will return to replace Ronald Koeman if Font is to win the elections this month.

"We announced a structure based on what was agreed with Xavi," Font explained. "Obviously we wouldn't have done it without his permission.

"If that had been the case, he would have come out and said it was nothing to do with him. All he said was that it didn't make sense to give explicit support to a single candidate."

Joan Laporta is another of the candidates, and he has dominated the polls, making him a clear early favourite.

"We start with the disadvantage of not being as well known as a former president," Font added.

"Laporta is No.1 for his level of impact and marketing.

"But we're convinced that, when the moment of truth arrives, the members will understand that the project shouldn't be built on nostalgia. They'll be excited by real events, not by memories of the past."

Pep Guardiola is another name regularly linked with making a return to Barcelona, and Font is keen to see him make a comeback as well.

"Without a doubt," he said when asked if he would offer Guardiola a contract when his stay at Manchester City ends. "I want to create an environment and keep hold of the greatest talent like Guardiola, who is the best coach in the world.

"He has already told us that what he did in 2008 is now up to other generations, like Xavi's. He thinks that Xavi is the ideal candidate to lead the project, but trying to get him back in another role will be a top priority."
