Former Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero is set to win thousands if Lionel Messi is named as the best player at the World Cup, after the Argentinian backed the Paris Saint-Germain star to win the Golden Ball award.
Aguero was convinced in the build-up to the tournament that Messi was about to shine on the biggest stage one last time. The 35-year-old has been the driving force for the South American side, as Argentina find themselves just one game away from winning the World Cup.
The former Barcelona star's performances have pushed himself firmly in the running to be awarded the Golden Ball by FIFA - the best player in the tournament. Should that happen, Aguero, who has stayed in close contact with his friend throughout the tournament, will be set for a payday worth thousands.
City's former striker wagered $1,001 (£822) that his ex-teammate will scoop the Golden Ball prize - at odds of 7/1. If Messi is eventually crowned as the winner, Aguero will win $8,264 (£6,782).
Such has been the impact Messi has made at the tournament, there have been comparisons with Argentina legend Diego Maradona.
But Aguero himself is not so sure the two should be compared, as he told Stake: “I never liked those comparisons. And it's not about who is more of a symbol.
“Each one occupies a very important place in the hearts of Argentines. I like more to think about how lucky we Argentines are to have Diego and Leo, each in his time, the best players in history.”
