Former Paris Saint-Germain striker Pauleta hopes Edinson Cavani remains at the club amid links to Atletico Madrid.

A recent report in El Mundo Deportivo cited French claims that the player would command a €14m transfer fee and is currently on €18m in wages, making a January switch to Madrid ‘almost impossible’.

Atleti are said to be operating on virtually 100% of their La Liga salary cap and would not be able to clear the funds needed for the Uruguayan in winter.

It follows a report earlier this week in Diario AS which claims Cavani looks set to leave the French capital and indeed is out of contract in six months time.

“Edinson is a great player, who is part of PSG's history,” former Portugal international  Pauleta told Le Parisien, in quotes cited by ESPN .

“Football is like that, though. I hope everything ends well and that PSG mark the occasion. The club and the player deserve for it all to finish well. I really like him, he is a great player and a great man.

“I hope Edinson will continue with PSG. However, one day, everything comes to an end -- "football is like that.”
