The son of Freddy Rincon has posted a moving tribute to his father on Instagram after a car crash left the Colombia legend in a critical condition.

Rincon, who played for Real Madrid and Napoli and was a key player during Colombia's golden generation during the 1990s, suffered severe head injuries after his car collided with a bus at a deserted crossroads in the early hours of Monday morning.

Four other people who were in the vehicle that Rincon was driving were also injured as well as the bus driver. Rincon has since undergone surgery after suffering a 'traumatic brain injury'.

His son Sebastian, 28, who plays for Argentinian side Barrascas Central, has since taken to social media to post a picture of himself holding his dad's hand as he lays in his hospital bed.

'Here we stand firm my old man,' Sebastian said in the caption under the touching tribute.

Fans of the Colombia legend have also held a vigil outside the medical centre where he is being treated in Cali.

Friends and family were seen praying while one man held up a sign which read: 'Freddy you will get out of this champion'.

Hamilton Ricard, also a former footballer and a close friend of Rincon's, visited his family at the hospital hours after the crash and didn't sound optimistic when he spoke to journalists outside.

'If he is saved, he will have a lot of side-effects,' Ricard said. 'We are praying for God to put his hands on Freddy, the doctors have said the truth.'

After the news broke of Rincon's crash, the tributes flooded in for the Colombia icon with former teams Real Madrid, Napoli and Palmeiras all paying homage to the 55-year-old.

Real Madrid, who booked their spot in the Champions League semi-finals after overcoming Chelsea in an epic encounter, tweeted: 'From Real Madrid CF, all of our strength and affection for Freddy Rincon following the accident he was involved in today.

'We send our encouragement and we hope that he overcomes this difficult moment as soon as possible.'

The Colombian FA also showed their support to Rincon on social media.

'The Colombian Football Federation and its Executive Committee send all their strength and support to former player Freddy Rincon, who is going through a delicate moment of health after suffering an accident,' the national association said on its official Twitter account.

'We wish you a speedy recovery and that with God's help you overcome this difficult situation.'

Former Chelsea, Manchester United and Atletico Madrid star Radamel Falcao, one of Colombia's best players in the last decade, also wished his compatriot a speedy recovery.

'My prayers and hugs to family and friends of Freddy Rincon in these difficult times. A lot of strength for him in these moments of fighting for his life,' Falcao tweeted.

Rincon, 55, was a commanding midfielder who played for Colombian sides Santa Fe and America.

He also had spells with Italian club Napoli and Spanish giants Real Madrid.

He captained Brazilian side Corinthians to the first club world championship title in 2000 and he was also part of the golden generation of Colombian players who took the national side to three consecutive World Cups in 1990, 1994 and 1998, alongside players such as Carlos Valderrama and Faustino Asprilla.

Rincon retired from the national team in 2001.

His club career began in 1985 and took off at America de Cali. After a brief and successful spell at Brazil's Palmeiras, he joined Napoli in 1994. He played the following season for Real Madrid and returned to Palmeiras in 1997.

He scored 17 goals during his international career and was on the scoresheet against Argentina in a memorable 5-0 World Cup qualifier victory in Buenos Aires in 1993.

Brazilian side Corinthians took to social media show their support for Rincon.
