French authorities are investigating €180,300 (approximately $195,000) in donations made by soccer star Kylian Mbappé in June 2023 to five police officers assigned to protect France’s national team.
The inquiry—first reported by the investigative weekly Le Canard Enchaîné—is being led by France’s General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN). It focuses on personal checks issued by Mbappé from a Monaco-based bank account in his name.
According to reports, four officers from a French special police unit each received €30,000 (about $32,500), while their commanding officer was given €60,300 (roughly $65,400) by Mbappé. The donations have triggered a formal investigation after France’s financial intelligence unit—Tracfin, which monitors money laundering, tax fraud, and terror financing—flagged the payments.
Mbappé shares out World Cup bonus
Sources cited by the French sports outlet L’Équipe claim the money came from the bonus Mbappé earned as captain of France’s national team, who finished as runners-up at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Mbappé had received €500,000 (around $543,000) from the French Football Federation and chose to donate the full amount to civic organizations and the police team assigned to protect the players.
“Every other staff member received their World Cup bonus except for these officers,” sources close to Mbappé told the outlet. The gesture was described as an act of fairness—a way to recognize hard work without expecting anything in return.
According to Le Canard Enchaîné, Mbappé consulted with his tax attorney prior to making the donations and was advised that such contributions didn’t require reporting to tax authorities.
However, investigators are now looking into claims that the commanding officer of the police group accompanied Mbappé on several private trips. Authorities are working to determine whether the officer carried out paid personal security work that was never officially declared.
