Getafe 2-0 Betis: Femenia & Satriano score as Los Azulones secure 3pts

Kiko Femenía’s first goal since April 2019 propelled Getafe to successive La Liga wins as José Bordalás’ side sealed a scrappy 2-0 home victory over Real Betis.

Match Report

In a first-half devoid of clear cut openings it was gritty Getafe who snatched their chances to secure a two-goal lead at the break. Domingos Duarte’s flick from a long Juan Iglesias throw-in caused panic in the visitors' penalty box, as Álvaro Valles' weak save fell kindly to Femenía on the six-yard line, and the veteran ruthlessly fired home off the crossbar to emphatically end his seven-year drought.

That setback rallied Betis into action, as Cucho Hernández’s whipped free-kick drew a diving stop from David Soria seven minutes later, but it was Getafe who had the final say in stoppage time after a flash point between Abde Ezzalzouli and Iglesias. Abdel Abqar’s hopeful clearance tempted Valles to inexplicably race out of his goal, and the in-form Martín Satriano raced in behind to chip the stricken Betis stopper for his third La Liga goal in four games.

Manuel Pellegrini’s charges carried an intermittent threat after the restart, as a towering header from Hernández drew a sharp reaction save from Soria on 55 minutes, but Getafe’s dogged defensive structure remained unflustered. The Chilean coach opted for a triple substitution on the hour mark, including introducing the talismanic Antony, who instantly curled a speculative effort just wide of Soria's post before fellow sub Cédric Bakambu was bravely thwarted by Soria two minutes from the end.

The hosts held on in the face of late Betis pressure for all three points and a fourth win from their last five top-flight outings, while it was also a fourth La Liga clean sheet in their last six matches. Bordalás’ team, who climbed into the top half with this victory, now face back-to-back away games, on the road at Atlético Madrid and Espanyol. Betis, meanwhile, missed the chance to pull six points clear of Celta Vigo as they gear up for a Thursday night clash in Greece in the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League against Panathinaikos.
