Uruguayan defender José María Gimenez reaches 100-cap milestone for national team, honored by Uruguayan Football Association.
Gimenez reached the 100-cap milestone for his national team during this international break. He achieved this feat after coming on as a substitute in last Thursday's friendly against Japan. On Monday, before Uruguay's second friendly in Asia against South Korea, the Uruguayan Football Association presented him with a jersey to recognize his 100 appearances for the national team. Uruguay still has one match left on its Asian tour, with the team set to play India on October 6.
Gimenez made his debut for the senior Uruguayan national team in September 2013 under coach Óscar Washington Tabárez. Prior to that, he was a key member of the Uruguayan team that finished as runner-up in the U20 World Cup that same year. For more than a decade, the center-back has been a regular for the senior Uruguayan national team, playing alongside stars like Diego Godín, Luis Suárez, Fernando Muslera, and Edinson Cavani.
Gimenez is currently the ninth most-capped player for Uruguay. Besides the aforementioned generational teammates, only Maxi Pereira, Martín Cáceres, Diego Forlán, and Cristian Rodríguez have more appearances than him. Diego Forlán currently serves as the head coach of the Uruguayan team. After Muslera was unavailable for the first national team call-up since the World Cup, Gimenez became the most experienced player in the squad and served as captain. Uruguay hopes to rejuvenate the squad and improve performance following their group stage exit at the World Cup and Forlán's first match as coach, which ended in a 3-1 defeat to Japan.
After reaching the 100-cap milestone for his national team, Gimenez will remain an important defensive player for Atlético Madrid this season.
