Glen Johnson and Richard Dunne clashed as they debated a host of topics about Manchester City and Liverpool ahead of the upcoming campaign.
The Citizens dramatically pipped the Reds to the Premier League title by a single point on the final day of last season.
Yet Jurgen Klopp's side gained the upper hand heading into this term after defeating City 3-1 in the Community Shield to claim the first piece of silverware of the season.
Dunne made over 350 appearances for Manchester City as a player, while Johnson turned out for Liverpool 200 times. And both were eager to fight their respective sides' corners when deliberating between the two teams and their manager.
Pep Guardiola has guided the Citizens to four of the last five Premier League titles and Dunne was quick to claim that the Spaniard had the edge over his opposing number Klopp.
Taking part in Betway's Red or Blue debate, the former City defender said: 'I think Klopp has done really well. He's pushed Man City, but Pep just knows how to get over the line.'
He added: 'I think the two of them are great managers, but the one that constantly comes out winning trophies is Pep, so I'm going to go for him.
While Johnson argued the case for Klopp, saying: 'It's harsh to take it away from Pep because he's won everything, but I just think Klopp's managed to compete with a squad like City with the squad hasn't always been that great.'
Both sides have made striker additions this summer, as City have signed Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, while the Reds have made the addition of Darwin Nunez to their squad.
The dispute between which team possesses the better front three has often divided fans - while Dunne and Johnson were no different.
'Liverpool's front three of Firmino, Mane and Salah is obviously gone now. I don't think Nunez is going to have the same impact as Haaland so I'm gonna go for City,' said Dunne.
Whereas Johnson stated: 'I just think if Nunez can get it right with the other two, I think that three will be more dynamic than the others until Haaland performs.'
Manchester City start their Premier League title defence at the London Stadium against West Ham on Sunday, while Liverpool visit Craven Cottage on Saturday.

Spend and win champions league is the right investment but I wonder after spending over one billion dollars could not buy single champions league what a SHAMELESS CLUB WITH SHAMELESS SPENDING.
The fact that they dominate the league tells you that they have what it takes to get it. Did you buy CL when your team win it? You play against the weakest team in the final that you won, more reason they final was tag as the most boring match.
