Hamann doubts whether Alaba can continue playing, hopes for Bundesliga return

On Sky Sport Austria's podcast, German football legend Hamann discussed the future of free agent Alaba.

Twelve league titles, seven cup wins, four Champions League titles: hardly any footballer has enjoyed a more illustrious career than Alaba (34). But the former Bayern and Real Madrid star is currently without a club, and questions have even arisen about whether he can return to the pitch.

Hamann said: "The question is whether he can still play."

The background: Alaba has been plagued by serious injuries in recent years. After a cruciate ligament tear, he missed the 2024 European Championship in Germany. He subsequently suffered multiple setbacks with meniscus tears and calf problems. Given these challenges, Hamann believes Alaba's possible career end may be approaching.

Hamann stated: "It's often hard to stop. Many people are like that. The longer it drags on, the more likely it is that we may never see him on a football field again."

Currently, the center-back is maintaining his fitness independently but has been without a club for over two months. Even Austrian national team coach Rangnick (68) recently did not call up the former captain.

Hamann defended Alaba: "He hasn't announced his retirement, and as long as he doesn't, people will speculate. In that regard, I somewhat defend him. He'll only hear these discussions in passing. For him, it probably doesn't matter."

Hamann hopes Alaba returns to the Bundesliga

On paper, there's no shortage of interested clubs. Alaba has been repeatedly linked with various clubs, with even a move to Messi's Inter Miami in MLS discussed. However, Hamann has a different preference entirely: "I would love to see him again, preferably in the Bundesliga. The fact that he's staying fit tells me he still believes he can play at a high level."
