Luis Suarez has moved to clear up why he underwent surgery that ruled him out of the Copa del Rey final as opposed to waiting until the end of the season.
With Suarez sitting in the stands as Valencia defeated Barcelona, with Leo Messi the only recognised attacker in the side, many have questioned whether the Uruguayan prioritised his country ahead of June's Copa America by fast-tracking his operation that ruled him out of the cup final.
However, the striker has defended that the injury was suffered at Anfield as opposed to the cartilage problem he had been carrying for some time and could not be put off.
"The injury that led to surgery has nothing to do with my cartilage but because of a torn meniscus that I suffered in the match against Liverpool, which is why I felt obligated to undergo surgery and miss yesterday's final against my will," he wrote in a statement.
On 9 May, Barcelona released a statement on the matter: "The first team player Luis Suarez has a medial meniscus injury in his right knee and has been operated on by Dr. Cugat, undergoing arthroscopic surgery under the supervision of the Club's medical staff. The Uruguayan will be out for around four to six weeks."

I've always insisted that the players, not the coach, is the problem. We are living on past glories and fantasies. We are one of the oldest teams in Europe. Watch the Liverpool and Valencia disasters again, if you dare- we were being killed on speed to the ball, and speed on the play. Period. Half the time, our players were waiting for the ball only for someone younger to beat them to the ball and intercept. Alba was left in the dust again and again. Our midfield moves like mud. Arthur is great but he lacks stamina. He is always so exhausted in games we're the opponents push on high press. Our back line? Pique is our best defender. Think about that for a moment. Forwards? Suarez was a tiger in his youth? Suarez now is an old tiger. Malcolm has no creativity, so even with his speed, he doesn't know what to do in the box. Coutinho? If he ever becomes even a marginally food player again, it won't be at Barca. We need new, younger legs. Mbappe is hailed as a great player not because he is (Ney is ten times the creative footballer Mbappe will ever be), it's because he is fast as the wind and decisive with the ball. Period. We need to be younger and get ride of the old man them
