Barcelona have been phasing out the 2010s generation over the past couple of summers, and it looked like Sergi Roberto was due to escape that shift again this summer. However the veteran captain has little certainty of his spot now, following the exit of Xavi Hernandez.

It was widely reported that Roberto had agreed terms on a new contract that would last one or two years, but Xavi was one of his largest advocates at the club. Matteo Moretto has confirmed that his future is uncertain with Hansi Flick replacing Xavi, and Roberto’s situation could be reassessed. Moretto told Fabrizio Romano’s Daily Briefing that Flick has been discussing transfer plans with Deco, but the latter will be a large role in the squad planning this summer.
Undoubtedly, Roberto’s chief attributes have been his leadership skills, experience and professionalism within the dressing room, but also his understanding of Barcelona’s style of play. Yet if Flick is keen to use a similar style to that which he has in the past, it would neither suit Roberto’s game, nor would his knowledge of the La Masia precepts be quite as useful.
