Inigo Martinez, Pedri, ter Stegen talk following Sociedad 0-1 Barcelona: “Did not play well”
Barcelona were hoping to return to winning ways as they took on Real Sociedad away from home at the prestigious Reale Arena.
One of the most offensive teams in the league, Sociedad took the game to Barça, and completely outplayed them for 85 minutes. They created multiple chances starting from minute one, only to be denied by Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
However, the tables turned during the last few minutes of the game as Barcelona started putting together a few string of passes that resulted in chances for Ferran Torres, Ronald Araujo, and Gavi.
Eventually in the 92nd minute, Ilkay Gundogan spotted a run in-behind the defence from Araujo, and chipped in the perfect ball for the Uruguayan to head home.
All three points after a shocking performance, but Barcelona will that after their defeat to Real Madrid last weekend.
Following the dramatic win, Inigo Martinez, Pedri, and Marc-Andre ter Stegen had a few thoughts to share with the press.
Inigo Martinez
Inigo put in yet another brilliant performance tonight, despite being booed by the ‘Anoeta’ faithful. The Spaniard came through Real Sociedad’s academy, played for the first team for seven years, before shifting his allegiances to join derby rivals Athletic Club.
He made a cheeky comment when asked about the whistles, saying, “It seems Anoeta has not forgotten about my departure.”
During the game, he was also handed a piece of paper from Xavi with tactical notes on it.
“That paper that Xavi gave me had so many instructions that I did not even know what to tell my teammates,” he joked.
“It was very difficult. We knew that Sociedad played very good football,” Inigo said about the game.
“We knew how to take advantage of the few opportunities that we had in the match. In the end, football is about scoring more goals than your opponent.”
Pedri & Ter Stegen
Another huge talking point from the game was Pedri’s return. The youngster was sidelined after picking up an injury after Barcelona’s win against Cadiz, and came on today in the second half.
“I wanted to return so badly. I hope to stay fit for a long time,” Pedri said with glee post-game.
As for the game, though, his comments echoed that of his teammates and coach.
“We didn’t play well, but the most important part is that we won the three points.”
Marc-Andre ter Stegen was handed the man of the match award for his efforts today, and was then handed the mic to comment on the performance.
“I don’t know if we deserved it, but we won with a little luck. We knew how to suffer and we kept a clean sheet. You always have the option to win in the last few minutes.”
