Selling Marcos Llorente made financial sense for Real Madrid. Bringing in 30 million euros to let him go to Atletico Madrid was a good deal in the summer of 2019, particularly with him being a players that Zinedine Zidane had no plans to use, but was the decision good on a sporting level?
Seeing his current level of performance at Atletico, it looks as though the answer to that is a simple 'no'.
The 25-year-old hasn't stopped growing under Diego Simeone, and he has put in some impressive performances for Los Colchoneros.
Now, Llorente has four goals this season and is more of a forward than a midfielder. Only Karim Benzema has more goals than he does this season among Real Madrid's squad and, according to Transfermarkt, his value is already at 45 million euros.
Gareth Bale: Still far from his best
The Welshman is back at Tottenham but has a slow start. Jose Mourinho would have expected more from him.
James Rodriguez: Fading
The Colombian enjoyed an incredible start at Everton, getting four goals and three assists to take them to the top of the table. But an injury and defeats have seen them fall off, and James' impact has faded as well.
Sergio Reguilon: A success story
The full-back is a regular for Mourinho and he already has two assists. He set off for 30 million euros.
Achraf Hakimi: A star at Inter
The full-back scored twice for Inter at Bologna, taking his tally to three for the season, as well as two assists. He went for 40 million euros.
Dani Ceballos: Has Mikel Arteta's confidence
He's into his second season at Arsenal and he is loved by Arteta. But the London side are struggling this season.
Jesus Vallejo: Finally has continuity
He hadn't managed to find form since that loan at Eintracht Frankfurt. Now, at Granada, he's growing again and is a regular starter. At 23, he could still return to Real Madrid and impress.
