Real Madrid have, at long last, confirmed the signing of Kylian Mbappé. The Frenchman joins from PSG after a career of flirtation with Los Blancos.

The signing has sparked a wave of enthusiasm from Madrid fans all around the world to get their hands on what is set to be the most in-demand shirt of the summer: Mbappé on Madrid white.

What number will Kylian Mbappé wear at Real Madrid?

The striker will inherit the number of a former French forward, someone who became a club legend, scored hundreds of goals and won a Ballon d’Or at the club (not bad!): Karim Benzema’s number 9.

While Mbappé wore number 7 for PSG, that belongs to Vini Jr, who is already somewhat giving up his undisputed place on the left; the number 10 shirt which Mbappé wears for France is also occupied by Luka Modric: he’s got no chance of taking it from the Croatian.

On the evening after Real Madrid confirmed their 15th Champions League, a quick check on the official Real Madrid website showed that the home and away shirts this season were all sold-out, with only the third kit being available in adult sizes.

As such, it’s not yet known whether or not the garment will return to stores in time before the 2024-25 kits are released. Even if they do return, it is not known if Real Madrid will opt to sell shirts from the season just gone by with a new player on front, given he did not actually play for them during that campaign.

Unofficial scarves and shirts bearing Mbappé's name have been on sale for months now outside the Bernabéu and across Madrid, although they have nothing to do with the club itself.

However, I don’t reckon we’ll have to wait long to find some official Mbappé merchandise, but perhaps we’ll have to wait either for his official presentation as a Real Madrid player or the club’s official presentation of the new kits for the upcoming campaign.
