I've been crying for the last 15 days - Referee Mallenco going to retire

Alberto Undiano Mallenco has revealed that he has been very emotional in recent weeks ahead of retiring from refereeing.

The Spaniard took charge of the Copa del Rey final and the UEFA Nations League final for his final two games of his career.

"I've been crying for the last 15 days," he said at the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) general assembly.

"[Luis] Rubiales asked me to make the effort to be here and I didn't expect my family to be here. It's been a blast."

Undiano has spent the last 19 years officiating at the highest level, so has he got a favourite moment?

"The last few games, the finals, but if I one moment stays with me, it's the opening game of the World Cup in South Africa," he said.

Undiano took charge of his final game on Sunday as Portugal defeated the Netherlands in the Nations League final.

"Ronaldo and the Dutch goalkeeper [Jasper Cillessen] wished me the best. They knew it was my last game," he said.
