Athletic Club kept their Champions League qualification hopes alive with a battling 2-0 victory over Getafe on Friday night. Inaki Williams scored both goals for Los Leones, who ended with nine men after Yeray Alvarez and Aitor Paredes were both sent off, but their real hero was Unai Simon.

The 26-year-old made nine saves throughout the 90 minutes, which included a late penalty save from Mason Greenwood. Getafe manager Jose Bordalas was keen to absolve the Manchester United loanee of any blame for the miss, and instead heaped praise on Simon’s for the stop, as per Marca.

“During the week, when he’s with us and takes penalties, he misses practically none. Rather than him missing it, it was a great save from Unai Simon. We can be calm in the national team, because we have a great goalkeeper.”

Simon is expected to be Spain’s starting ‘keeper for this summer’s European Championship in Germany, and La Roja would certainly love it if he can replicate his performances for Athletic Club.
