Jurgen Klopp moans at Wolves fans for taunting Liverpool while they suffered title agony at Anfield

Jurgen Klopp has bemoaned the actions of Wolves supporters who mocked their title agony at Anfield, saying he 'didn't understand' how they could be so cruel.

His Liverpool side needed to better the result of leaders Manchester City on the final day, and although they eventually beat Wolves 3-1, City came back from 2-0 down to beat Aston Villa 3-2 and clinch the Premier League championship by a single point.

The away fans cheered when news of City's goals came through, taunting the home crowd, who were desperately hoping for good news from the Etihad.

They also started a false rumour that Villa had made it 3-3, leading Liverpool supporters to start cheering and hugging each other, believing an unlikely turnaround was complete.

But their joy was premature - with players with Takumi Minamino urging the fans to calm down and Virgil van Dijk looking furious - and Klopp questioned why the Wolves fans would act that way.

He said: 'I obviously was not really in that situation, I didn't know 100 per cent what was going on. I realised Aston Villa were in front...

'Congratulations, first and foremost, to Man City. Pep Guardiola, all his staff and everybody from City for winning a tough race. That's how it is. If you want to win big, you have to be ready to lose big. We lost big today - not the game, but the league.

'The mood is obviously very, very disappointed. I would prefer if City were 5-0 up after 10 minutes. When it's this up and down, it was 3-2 and for a second somebody said it was 3-3, I felt for a second like we could become champions.'

When asked if the wave of cheers that spread around Anfield gave him temporary hope, the German answered in the affirmative.

He added: 'Yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't understand how the Wolverhampton supporters can celebrate when City score a goal. I don't understand these kind of feelings. But it was not completely unexpected, we knew it could happen.'

One Wolves fan responded on Twitter by saying: 'Klopp on 5 live saying he can't understand why Wolves fans we're cheering City's goals,' followed by nine cry-laughing emojis.

After Pedro Neto gave the Midlands side a shock early lead, goals from Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson turned it around - but City had turned it around against Villa too.
