Real Madrid are facing a nervous wait to discover the seriousness of an injury picked up by Kylian Mbappé during Saturday’s LaLiga victory.

Los Blancos beat Villarreal 3-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu, with Mbappé adding his 14th goal in ten games in all competitions. But the Frenchman appeared to pick up an injury late on, receiving on-field medical treatment before being substituted.

Young star Franco Mastantuono also sustained an injury during the game and head coach Xabi Alonso was asked for an update on both players’ fitness in the post-game press conference.

“Mbappé has discomfort in his ankle, Mastantuono has an overload,” Alonso said. “We will see, we will keep monitoring them.”

“We’ll have to see how it develops,” he added. “If it gets complicated, he won’t be able to play. We’ll see.”

After this weekend’s fixture European soccer will go on pause for the second FIFA international break of the season. Mbappé‘s France have World Cup qualifiers coming up against Azerbaijan and Iceland, and the 26-year-old presence is now surely in doubt.

Real Madrid retook top spot in LaLiga with the win over Villarreal. They now have 21 points from eight games, one more than second-place Barcelona have played. If Barcelona win against Sevilla on Sunday they will go into the international break in pole position.
