Liverpool have been urged to take action by a former player amid claims they could lose one of their key stars, with reported transfer interest from an overseas rival
An ex-Liverpool striker has criticised the club for their handling of Andy Robertson's contract as Atletico Madrid eye a move for the left-back. The 31-year-old, who has lifted the Premier League title twice since his arrival from Hull City in 2017, is now entering the final year of his current deal at Anfield.
Robertson has been a key player for Liverpool, helping them win the Champions League in 2019, with multiple domestic accolades under his belt. The Scotland international became the subject of reports linking him with a transfer to Atletico last week.
Despite having initial discussions about his future at Liverpool, criticism has now been aimed at the club for not securing his services for longer. Former Liverpool forward Dean Saunders expressed dismay at the thought of Robertson leaving, likening it to Trent Alexander-Arnold's switch to Real Madrid.
Liverpool appear eager to sign Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez as they plan for a long-term future without Robertson. However, Saunders has called for the Reds to prolong his stay.
Speaking on talkSPORT, the ex-Wolves and Wrexham manager said: "It's another disastrous piece of business from Liverpool. They let Trent's contract run out. Don't blame Trent, blame the club.
"With two years left on his contract, they should have called him in and said, 'Are you going to sign this contract? Or we're going to have to sell you.'
"Andy Robertson is in the same position. He's only 31, and he's as good a left back as you can get anywhere. Why are you trying to change him? I don't know. He's got another three years left in him, so give him a new contract."
Robertson recently confirmed that he has held initial talks with Liverpool over a new contract, but his long-term future at the club remains uncertain.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Robertson said: "We have discussed it, of course we have. We've had good discussions with me and the club but what the future holds I am not sure.
"I need a rest after a long season and then I look forward to pre-season, that's all my focus is, I can't look too far ahead. I never have done that so I am not going to start doing that now.
"I know the position I am in and I have only got a year left and a lot is getting spoken about and getting said but my full focus is on being a dad for the next couple of weeks and enjoying that time with the kids.
"Then I will try to come back in the best possible shape for pre-season and then we'll see what the future holds when these decisions come."

Tsimikas has been better than him last season is just Slot rigidity and strong hasn't helped him, and rust many splayers that could had helped them win more than a trophy, hope Pep won't take the league this season, Chiesa would have played more matches, Darwin and Elliot more than the did,are you seeing how he played his new players,Slot would tell you that he doesn't change his team even when he's trusted are getting tired, still prefer them more than the bench to freshen up the team

Andy Robertson doesn't want to be a back up when he can possibly get a starter position elsewhere. would have loved for him to stay but I won't hold him back if he wants to be a starter. have we forgotten that kerkez is all but here already? FSG and Trent knew he wouldn't sign a new contract. they were probably trying to convince him for a while to stay. have we forgotten the mammoth contract they were prepared to offer him? he wanted out and he wanted the new challenge. RM provide that out

With Andrew, I’d say let him go, but they can be arguments to keep him, but for me he was a shadow of a shadow of himself from what I’ve seen him produces over his stay at Liverpool. In the recently concluded season, He was poor, extremely so. 1 assist in 33 prem games, compared to 3 goals and 2 assist in 23 prem games the season before, not to talk of the previous seasons
