According to Sport, La Liga will introduce Puma smart balls and new technology to assist refereeing decisions in the 2026/27 season.
The new season will use Puma smart balls similar to those used in the FIFA World Cup. These can help identify contact between the ball and players, allowing for more accurate determination of when a pass occurred, whether there was contact that was difficult to detect with the naked eye, double touches in penalties, or handball. This will provide new assistance to VAR referees, making football decisions fairer.
