Never compare a young player to the all time greats of the game because when they don’t meet the exceptionally difficult expectations that they have been thought to complete with a breeze, all the critics will call them a failure as if they have been playing consistently for years

Usually kids his age are expected to be more modest, down to earth and aren't walking around with a known shark getting himself the kind of contract that is usually made for ready-made stars. Now he got himself trapped. He has to perform like a superstar and will not be afforded the kind of margins of error and the encouragement that youngsters at his age are usually given that helps their development. With a salary up to €24m a year and an €80m fee (or 75 whatever) and all the saga and all the other clauses included by his shark agent, this kid now will be expected to live up to it at this young age.

I watched Maldini in Sacchi's first European Cup winning team in 1988-1989 ply alongside Baresi and Costacurta (and Ancelotti, Van Basten, Gullit, Donadoni, Rijkaard, Tassotti etc). Maldini was playing left back back those days alongside Costacurta and Baresi as centerbacks and Tassotti as right back, Ancelotti was the one to move him to center back later when he became Milan coach. So 17 year old Maldini can't exactly be compared to de Ligt in the position, but he had a better head on his shoulder from what I've seen about de Ligt as he and Raiola have been negotiating all that money and conditions with a lot of clubs and all those quotes from him. Maldini was a club boy of course and he played and finished as a club legend by only playing for Milan.
