Luca Zidane made his FIFA World Cup debut on Tuesday night in Kansas City, USA, starting for Algeria against Argentina. It had been 20 years since his father Zidane last played in the FIFA World Cup. The father and son thus became the 27th father-son duo to have played in the FIFA World Cup, and only the second father-son duo to represent different national teams. Zinedine and Luca's FIFA World Cup story continues. 20 years later, the second son of the former French No. 10 also made his debut on the FIFA World Cup stage. Zinedine Zidane participated in the 1998, 2002, and 2006 FIFA World Cups, while Luca Zidane made his debut in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Zinedine and Luca Zidane thus became the 27th father-son duo to participate in the FIFA World Cup, and only the second father-son duo to play for different national teams – the father representing France and the son representing Algeria. Before the Zidane father and son, only Mazinho (Brazil) and Thiago Alcantara (Spain) were in this situation.
