Lukaku’s ear covering celebration was a response to his critics (GdS)

Inter striker Romelu Lukaku's unique celebration after his first goal against Genoa may have been a reaction to the criticism he's received this season, according to a report from yesterday's paper edition of the Milano based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

The report details how the 26-year-old Belgian striker put his fingers in his ears after scoring his first goal against Genoa on Saturday night. The player would go on to score a second, provide an assist and give away a penalty to teammate Sebastiano Esposito, who scored his first Nerazzurri goal thanks to his striking partner.

The report suggests that the celebration was a response to the criticism he's received from some fans and pundits, following on from his muted performances against Roma, Barcelona and Fiorentina, all games the Nerazzurri failed to win. Lukaku's performance against Genoa on Saturday showed that he doesn't need attacking partner Lautaro Martinez to shine and can help guide the team to victory.
