Man United are 'eyeing up move for Monchengladbach keeper Yann Sommer on a free next summer'

Yann Sommer could be coming to Old Trafford next summer on a free transfer, according to a new report.

The Swiss goalkeeper has been representing his country on their route to the World Cup knockout stages, away from his club Borussia Monchengladbach.

However, his contract at the Bundesliga club runs out next summer, and it looks increasingly likely the 33-year-old will move away.

Now ESPN have revealed that Manchester United are working on a deal to nab Sommer on a free deal - and can start work on an approach from the beginning of next month.

Erik ten Hag is considering a refresh of his goalkeeping options at the club, with questions over David de Gea's long-term future at Old Trafford, despite playing over 500 games for the Red Devils.

De Gea is the first choice shot-stopper at Man United, but his recent form saw him omitted from Spain's World Cup squad.

After 12 years with the club, de Gea's contract also expires at the end of the season, and Man United have yet to extend the deal despite that option being available to them.

On-loan keeper Martin Dubravka is set to return to Newcastle United next summer, whilst ten Hag is set to welcome back Dean Henderson, who is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest.

Sommer played in Switzerland's opening two games at the World Cup last month, conceding just once, as well as their 6-1 loss to Portugal which saw them eliminated at the round-of-16.

The experienced goalkeeper has made 80 appearances for his national side, as well as over 270 appearances for his German club since joining them from Basel in 2014.

Borussia Monchengladbach currently sit in eighth place in the Bundesliga. Despite Germany's early exit from the World Cup, their main league does not return until January 22.
