Manchester United players have started following team mate Mason Greenwood on Instagram after his arrest over allegations of rape and assault.

A number of stars appeared to unfollow the young forward on the social media platform after shocking claims that he attacked an 18-year-old student emerged at the weekend.

The latest to drop Greenwood, 20, was Victor Lindelof, but having unfollowed his colleague earlier this week, the Swedish defender has now restored the striker to a list of 298 people he is following.

As reported by Sportsmail, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Fred, were not following the star on Monday, but they too have now added Greenwood to the people they follow on Insta.

On Tuesday, Greenwood was further arrested by Greater Manchester Police on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill and spent a third night in custody.

The England striker was first detained on Sunday after distressing pictures and audio circulated on social media alleging he attacked a young woman.

There has been a strong reaction among fans and sponsors over Greenwood’s arrest.

Manchester United removed all Mason Greenwood merchandise from the club website on Monday as angry fans returned replica shirts bearing the player’s name to the Old Trafford megastore.

Nike has suspended the player’s sponsorship deal, United’s shirt sponsors TeamViewer said they are ‘closely monitoring developments’ and official partner Cadbury announced Greenwood will not feature on any of their marketing products.

The striker was removed from FIFA 22 in an update on Tuesday. After a database update for all platforms including Xbox, PlayStation and PC, the Manchester United striker no longer features in the popular computer game for offline modes.

But his FIFA 22 Ultimate Team item is still active and can be swapped on the game's FUT 22 transfer market, the Manchester Evening News reports.

A number of the club’s star players, including Cristiano Ronaldo, David de Gea and Paul Pogba appeared to have unfollowed Greenwood on Insta, despite following other squad members.

Police said in a statement on Tuesday evening: 'Detectives have been granted further additional time to speak to a man in his 20s who was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault of a woman.

'The suspect was detained in custody on Sunday afternoon after we became aware of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence.

'He continues to be questioned after magistrates authorised an extension until tomorrow [Wednesday].

'Following enquiries so far, he has since been further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill.

'Enquiries are ongoing and the victim continues to be offered specialist support.'

The images which circulated online at the weekend have since been removed.

Another post included a voice recording of a conversation between a man and a woman, dated October last year.

In the wake of the allegations, United put out a statement saying it was aware of them and they were making inquiries 'to establish the full circumstances'.

It added: 'Manchester United does not condone violence of any kind.'

United then went further and said the player would 'not return to training or play matches until further notice'.

Meanwhile, Greenwood's team-mates were pictured in training on Tuesday as they continue to prepare for their FA Cup fourth-round clash with Middlesbrough - their first fixture since the Premier League's winter break.

Ralf Rangnick's side welcome the Championship club to Old Trafford on Friday night as they continue their pursuit of silverware this season.

It is the club's first match since the winter break. They beat West Ham United in the Premier League last time out, with an injury time winner from Marcus Rashford.

Nike - the world-famous sportswear giant - released a statement stating that they were 'deeply concerned'.

It was also revealed their connection with Greenwood has been put on hold.

A statement read: 'We have suspended our relationship with Mason Greenwood. We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation.
