Man Utd fail in deadline day move for midfielder as loan deal knocked back

Manchester United were busy on transfer deadline day but failed to secure a late move for a midfielder after making a surprise enquiry with little time remaining in the window

Manchester United failed in a late move for Conor Gallagher. The Red Devils enquired to Atletico Madrid over the possibility of landing the England midfielder on loan.

The La Liga giants told United chiefs they would only consider a sale for the former Chelsea star, per the Daily Mail. At this point, the 13-time Premier League champions opted to concede defeat and prioritise signing a new midfielder in January or next summer.

United already failed in their attempts to land Brighton's Carlos Baleba this summer. The Seagulls appeared to want a fee in excess of £100million to part ways with the 21-year-old Cameroon international.

Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro have been the midfield of Ruben Amorim's choice so far this season with the likes of Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte spending most of their time among the substitutes. Nevertheless it was deemed an area the club wanted to improve after replenishing their frontline.

United spent in the region of £200m to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves, Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford and Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig.

It does appear that the Red Devils will get a deal for a new goalkeeper over the line however. Senne Lammens is to arrive from Royal Antwerp in a deal worth £18.2m.

That signing comes amid a difficult start to the season for United's current goalkeepers. Altay Bayindir saw errors cost goals against Burnley and Arsenal, and put in an uncertain performance against Fulham, while Andre Onana cost his side on two occasions in defeat to Grimsby.

Speaking after his side's first win of the season against the Clarets, Amorim acknowledged he was speaking to the club's hierarchy ahead of deadline day. "I am always speaking with them to try and improve the team," he said.

Napoli have confirmed a deal for Rasmus Hojlund with the striker moving initially on loan, with the club having an obligation to buy the forward at the end of the season. The Italian side are set to pay £38m.

Antony and Jadon Sancho are also set to make exits to Real Betis and Aston Villa respectively. United are set to earn £21.6m from the former's sale to the side he spent time on loan at last season while Sancho is expected to move on loan.
