Manchester United have reportedly already earmarked a ready-made replacement for Paul Pogba, should the midfielder leave as a free agent next summer as expected.
United face losing the World Cup winner to an elite European rival, with the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus all linked with his services.
But new boss Ralf Rangnick and the Old Trafford board have reportedly already spotted another Frenchman who they believe can come in and fill the Pogba void.
The Red Devils will turn to 22-year-old starlet Boubacar Kamara, according to the Athletic.
The youngster is also on the verge of running down his deal and could be available for free at the end of the season, should he fail to agree fresh terms with Marseille.
Kamara rejected deadline-day moves to Wolves and Newcastle United in the most recent market, though lines of communication with Newcastle have remained open following the club's Saudi Arabian takeover.
Bayern Munich and Barcelona are also reportedly very interested, particularly given the financial gains of the deal.
After making his senior debut in 2016, Kamara has registered more than 100 appearances and represented France from Under-17 to Under-21 level.
With Kamara's apparent unwillingness to pen a new deal in France, Marseille could yet be forced to sell the youngster in January in order to recoup some transfer fee.
New boss Rangnick, who will move into a consultancy role at the club following his spell as interim manager, is understood to be priortising central midfield in the European market.
At present United deploy both Scott McTominay and Fred as holding midfielders, with Pogba, Bruno Fernandes and Donny van der Beek rotating just ahead.
Veteran playmaker Juan Mata has also remained an option from the bench.

Hey Manchester United board... go ahead if you wish to sign Kamara, but it's pointless to compare him as perfect replacement for Pogba ! 😓
