Mason Mount deletes his Twitter account and cryptically names 'the platform changing' as his reason

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount has deleted his Twitter account due to 'the platform changing' for the worse.

The 24-year-old has been placed under heightened scrutiny this season amid poor results from his side, and has been heavily linked with a move away from the club.

After being named Chelsea player of the year in 2020/1 and 2021/2, he has scored just three goals this term amid a dip in form.

The Blues have suffered accordingly, slipping to 11th in the Premier League table after a turbulent season to date.

They were knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid on Tuesday, meaning Frank Lampard's side have little to play for for the rest of the season.

In a somewhat cryptic Tweet, the midfielder announced: 'Over the years I’ve thoroughly enjoyed connecting with you all on Twitter.

'Sadly, the platform is changing so I have decided to delete my account. You all can still connect with me on my other social media platforms. Take care, Mason.'

The Tweet led to mass speculation on Twitter, with some taking it as a sign that Mount will soon be leaving the club.

Others felt it was 'sad' and indicative of how 'vile' the platform had become, after Tottenham fullback Pedro Porro also deleted his social media accounts following a mistake in his side's loss to Bournemouth at the weekend.

While the midfielder's reasons for leaving Twitter remain unclear, a move to Anfield does appear to be on the cards this summer.

The Reds have recently expressed an interest in Ryan Gravenberch of Bayern Munich, but Sportsmail understands that Mount is also a key target for Jurgen Klopp.

Newcastle have also been linked with the England international, but they are not willing to change their current wage structure to sign new players, which may dissuade the likes of Mount.

Chelsea will next be in action against Brentford on Wednesday, before potentially having a say in the title race when they face Arsenal the following Tuesday.
