Mauricio Pochettino was left incensed by the referee deciding to stop the game and blow the half-time whistle while his Chelsea team were on the attack against Wrexham
A 5-0 win against newly-promoted League Two opposition in Wrexham. It doesn't sound like too much to get excited about. Or does it?
With all of the context provided, though, Chelsea supporters will be forgiven if they blow the victory and performance out of proportion. The Blues, over the past 12 months, have been nothing short of a shambles on the pitch. A 12th-placed finish in the Premier League last season means there is no European football to look forward to over the next few months.
Four different managers, two of them being permanent, have come and gone. Over £600million has been spent on bringing players to the club and only a handful of them have showed – thus far, anyway – they have what it takes. But this was the start of a new era at Stamford Bridge. Hopefully, the final 'new era' I have to write for a long time.
Mauricio Pochettino took charge of his first Chelsea game and while much sterner opposition will follow in his tenure, the match against Wrexham was the perfect opener for the Argentine. Five goals, 20 players used and a clean sheet made it the ideal start to pre-season for Pochettino and his young squad.
And a moment at the end of the first-half that may be the clearest indication yet of why Pochettino will be a hit with Chelsea fans. The referee blew for half-time while Chelsea were on the ball and attacking the Wrexham defence. It looked promising, but the referee decided to stop the game for the break anyway, leaving Pochettino furious with the official.
The Argentine marched towards the referee to remonstrate with the official. It's a moment that might not seem very significant on the surface, but it does show Chelsea fans what sort of character they now have in their dugout.
Many Chelsea supporters accused former head coach Graham Potter of lack the passion needed to become a success at Stamford Bridge. Potter was ultimately sacked for the lack of progress he made during his almost-seven-month spell at the club, but the 48-year-old never endeared himself too much to the fan base.
It was the polar opposite with his predecessor Thomas Tuchel. The German was an immensely popular figure with the club's fan base even when he was relieved of his duties back in September. With Tuchel, you could feel his passion on the touchline. You could also share with the pain and agony he felt when things were not going his side's way. He almost became one of the Chelsea fan base.
That's what it feels like we will be getting with Pochettino. Someone to go to war for you. See Jose Mourinho, for example – one of the most popular figures to ever represent the club as a manager, and one of the most successful, too.
It isn't all about passion, though, otherwise every die-hard Chelsea supporter in the world could have a job in elite football. No, there's much more to it than that and Pochettino has proven in his managerial career that he has the tactical capability and man-management skills to be a top, top coach.
Even in the 90 minutes we saw against Wrexham, there were some moments of what we could now describe as 'Poch Ball'. Little passing and movement link-ups between players. Plenty of energy. Refreshing to see.
But nothing stuck out to me more than Pochettino lividly calling out the referee. Brilliant. Exactly what Chelsea need.
Let's also put this into some perspective: this furious outburst from Pochettino came in a pre-season friendly. Against a League Two side. God help the referee if something similar happens against Liverpool next month in the Premier League.

Forgetting that they're better than Caicedo just take a look at Aston Villa squad even there midfielders. Aston Villa mean business in this 2023/2024 premier league season
The problem that you have is that you believe in another club’s players but you don’t trust in your own players, and that’s why Chelsea always sell out talented players

What made you think they’re class players, you can only say you like them they’re your choice but not choice of the coach. Everyone has his own choice

Those players can't compete at highest level, Chelsea should sign at least 6 or 8 matured players, Stop this drama of signing premature players who is not going to bring any change to the club
your comment tells me how you think 🤔
