With his retirement announced and his dazzling career now ready to be put into perspective, Sergio Busquets must now find his place in soccer history.
Maxi Falcón, his teammate at Inter Miami, has no doubt about where the Badia del Vallès native stands.
“He's a silent leader, as they say, a player who I don't know if I'll ever see again on the field. He's the best ‘5’ in history,” the Uruguayan center back told MD when asked what he had learned from Busi after his team's match in Toronto.
"I really like his style of play, and I don't know if I learned a lot in terms of the game, but he's also a great person, and that comes across in the locker room. Like I said, he's a quiet leader, and there are little things that you take away for the future. I'm young, I'm 28, and the idea is to keep growing little by little," said Falcón, who is grateful to be able to share the field with someone he has watched and enjoyed so many times on television as a fan of that Barça team with Busi alongside Xavi and Iniesta in a midfield considered by many to be the best of all time.
One of Inter Miami's starting center backs described how it feels to always have a pivot of Busquets' caliber nearb
"At his age, his quality remains intact. It's a pleasure to always have him there and to pass to him when you're under pressure and he's the first option, because we know he rarely loses the ball. Something nice for us as defenders is that it encourages us a little more to try to dare to play out and thread those passes that are risky when playing with a midfielder with his back to goal and the opposition pressing high up the pitch. But we trust him blindly," explained Falcón.
The history of soccer has seen great defensive midfielders such as Lottar Matthäus, Frank Rijkaard, and Fernando Redondo, to name a few, but even though he has not yet retired, some are already proclaiming Sergio Busquets as the best in history.
