Messi makes it 16 consecutive seasons of Champions League scoring

By scoring a penalty in the first half of Barcelona'sChampions League match against Ferencvaros on Tuesday night, Lionel Messi made it 16 seasons in a row with at least one Champions League goal.

In every season since his first Champions League goal against Panathinaikos in November of the 2005/06 season, he has hit the back of the net. That was his only goal during that triumphant European campaign and he netted one in 2006/07.

Then, the Argentine really exploded and netted at least six Champions League goals in every season between 2007/08 and 2018/19, hitting a high of 14 in 2011/12. Last year was his lowest tally since 2006/07, as the No.10 only scored three times - against Slavia Prague, Borussia Dortmund and Napoli.

He's already up and running this term, with his penalty his second goal for Barcelona in total in 2020/21 after also netting from the spot against Villarreal in LaLiga Santander.

The goal also means he has now scored against 36 different opponents in the Champions League, a record.
