Mikel Arteta admits Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was left 'emotionally drained' after his mother was struck by illness.
Aubameyang returned for the midweek defeat by Wolves, having trained alone and missed three matches due to the family heartache.
Arteta hopes he will be ready to contribute again in Saturday's trip to Aston Villa, despite being weighed down by painful baggage in recent weeks.
'It's been tough because when you see a member of your family suffering and going through a difficult period, it drains you emotionally and you have to be close to them,' the Arsenal manager said.
'It was difficult. He wants to be here, he wants to be training, he doesn't want to miss football matches... he wants to play every minute of every single competition. So he was having the responsibility to be with his family but at the same time he wanted to be here.
'He was training on his own and I think he's managed that really well.'
The 31-year-old forward recently thanked Arsenal's fans for the support they showed during his absence.
'When things are difficult and you are away from that place you think, "Are they thinking of me? Are they supporting me?" And the answer is a big "yes".
'He's a player that is very much liked and respected because of his character and for what he's done at the club. He totally deserved that support.'
Even with Aubameyang ready to return, Arteta's options are now more limited after Arsenal let several players leave during the January winner.
Academy graduates Joe Willock and Ainsley Maitland-Niles left on loan - to Newcastle and West Brom, respectively - having fallen below the likes of Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe in the pecking order.
Arteta suggested their long-term futures will be determined at the end of the season. 'I expect all the loans that they come back and we make a decision in the summer,' he said.

That's also a good option, to drop Aubameyang in the hope of Pépé continuing his good form and giving us more cutting edge from out wide. Aubameyang might have to be used as an impact sub if Laca and Pépé continue playing well, so I don't mind. The reason why I strongly considered Grealish as my FPL captain for this gameweek is because I know he'll be up against Heccy who has zero positional sense. Put him 1v1 against Grealish and we'll have to rely on Holding to bail him out which he can't do every time if Bellerín lets Grealish skips past him as expected 6-7 times. I know it's not good to focus too much on one individual player but I'm dead serious, I'd rather see Cédric on the right-hand side instead of him. He is more adept at stopping Grealish than Bellerín aka Carl Jenkinson with pace. If he does, than Partey and Holding will need to do a lot to help him out. I don't want any passengers. This is the line-up I expect Arteta to pick. Ryan is back from injury and he is fit, I'll be surprised if he doesn't start because he trained well in the last 2 days.

if this is your team against villa I don't think it's good and Ryan is injured.I won't put Auba in the team.We lost creative spark on the wing because he is technically shite and Pepe and saka has been fairly decent so I ain't change there position or do anything to fit Auba.

I know you've seen how massive it is to have Saka upfront, he's not just creating he's Scoring
I also know how risky it is to see Bellerín 1v1 with Grealish

Against Aston villa Leno & Ryan cannot be in goal NOT 🚫 even on the bench due to red card and injury,,,, so we have to do with the only available material 👉 Alex Runarsson but who will be the sub,, ❓we sold Martinez and MARCEY ,, 😢😢😢
Martinez demanded transfer because he never wanted to be backup of Leno He is proving to be a better GK than Leno
