Luka Modric didn't manage to lead Croatia to the quarter-finals at Euro 2020 after Spain managed to grab a 5-3 extra-time victory at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen.
The Real Madrid midfielder was frustrated with Croatia teammate Ante Rebic, who spent three minutes off the pitch changing his boots, as La Roja benefited from their numerical superiority to level the game through Pablo Sarabia.
Modric asked Rebic for an explanation, with coach Zlatko Dalic also getting annoyed with the forward, who seemed to be emotionally collapsing at half time.
Modric was brilliant in the second half but looked tired in extra time before he was eventually replaced with the score at 5-3 in favour of La Roja.
"We took the lead with a lucky goal," Modric said after the game.
"Afterwards, they were better, at least for the first 60 minutes. We stopped too long and let them play. When we attacked more, we played better and created more chances, and from there came the draw, when we showed quality and character.
"At the beginning of extra time we had them on the ropes, but we couldn't score on two occasions. Then the game changed and we didn't have the strength to come back."
Once the final whistle blew, Modric was seen comforting his children.
