Mourinho faces uncertain squad selection as Real Madrid return, five starting spots up for grabs

Mourinho's return to Real Madrid brings significant lineup decisions, with several key positions remaining unsettled ahead of the new season.

The new Real Madrid coach faces tough decisions upon his return, with as many as five starting positions currently undecided. Recent signings—Cucurella, Konate, Dumfries, and Bernardo Silva—have intensified competition throughout the squad. Pre-season will be crucial for Mourinho to finalize his starting XI before the campaign begins.

Certain positions are secured: Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, Bellingham, Valverde, Cucurella, and Courtois form the core of the new Real Madrid. This guarantees fierce competition at right-back, both center-back positions, defensive midfield, and right-wing.

Dumfries's arrival complicates Trent Alexander-Arnold's path to the starting XI. The Dutch fullback's defensive prowess and physicality better suit Mourinho's system, though Alexander-Arnold's attacking threat could prove valuable in key matches. Both will feature, but only one can start regularly.

Center-back selection presents another puzzle. With Konate's arrival, the candidate pool has expanded to five. The French defender was Liverpool's starter but saw limited World Cup action and is eager to establish himself. Huijsen also gets a second chance to replicate his Club World Cup form after fading mid-season. Rüdiger and Militão remain strong options if healthy—both have proven Champions League credentials—though injury concerns linger from last season. Academy prospect Asensio rounds out the options and will push hard whenever called upon.

Bernardo Silva's signing addresses Real Madrid's midfield creativity shortage. After playing midfield for Manchester City last season, he'll compete with Valverde and Tchouaméni for a starting role, while Camavinga aims to recapture his best form. Thiago Pintado, who impressed last season, faces a crossroads: pursue a loan move for consistent playing time or fight for opportunities within the squad. The club continues monitoring the transfer market for midfield reinforcements, though no concrete targets have emerged.

Right-wing remains uncertain. While Olise is the primary target, Real Madrid will explore internal options if a transfer stalls. Güler holds an edge following an excellent season, with Brahim Díaz pushing hard for a starting spot. Mastantuono and Endrick must weigh whether a loan spell or squad development better serves their careers. Rodrygo is recovering from a serious injury and is expected to return in early 2027.

From August 5-10, the final group of World Cup players will report for pre-season. This period is vital for Mourinho and his staff to settle all uncertainties and begin their quest to reclaim La Liga.
