The Brazilian has barely featured for Al Hilal since his $98 million move to Saudi Arabia but is still hopeful of appearing at the 2026 World Cup.
As we enter the final six months of the deal, Neymar Jr’s $98 million move from Paris Saint-Germain to Al Hilal has not yet proved fruitful for the Saudi club.
After 18 months the injury-struck Brazilian has played just seven matches for Al Hilal. Within months of arriving in Saudi Arabia he suffered a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear while away on international duty and was sidelined for a year. His return last November brought about a hamstring injury, followed by an abdominal complaint earlier this week. At this stage, it looks increasingly unlikely that he will remain with Al Hilal beyond this season.
That has sparked fresh debate about his future and the prospect of a move to MLS side Inter Miami. Neymar formed one-third of the famous ‘MSN’ trio with Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez at Barcelona. Now, a decade on from the treble-winning season, Neymar has revealed that he would like a reunion.
Asked about the prospect of signing for Inter Miami, Neymar said: “Obviously playing again with Messi and Suárez would be incredible. They are my friends. We still speak to each other. It would be interesting to revive the trio.”
He continued: “I’m happy at Al Hilal, I’m happy in Saudi Arabia. But who know, football is full of surprises.”
Will Neymar play at the 2026 World Cup?
Over the past 18 months Neymar has become elite soccer’s forgotten man. From one of the most talented and most famous players on the planet, his sustained absence has seen him drift from the minds of many fans.
However it is fair to say that Brazil has not forgotten. The national team has struggled without Neymar and sit fifth in the qualifying table for the 2026 World Cup, winning only five of their first 12 games. Head coach Dorival Júnior has confirmed that there is still a place in the team for the aging superstar. Still only 32 years old, Neymar confirmed that his sights are set on next year’s tournament.
“Of course, for sure. I will try I want to be there. I known this will be my last World Cup, my last shot. My last chance and I will do everything I can to be a part of it.”
He would likely be a popular addition to the Brazil squad, provided that he can return to full fitness. He remains an icon to many of the newer generation of Brazilian players. Rodrygo Goes, who donned Brazil’s famous No. 10 jersey at last year’s Copa America in Neymar’s absence, insisted that he was simply “keeping it warm” for Neymar.
