Nine-hundred and counting: Messi follows in Ronaldo's footsteps

Lionel Messi has moved onto 900 career goals.

His strike for Inter Miami against Nashville SC in the Champions Cup on Wednesday saw the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner move into an illustrious club.

Messi's old rival Cristiano Ronaldo is the only other player to have netted over 900 times for club and country. The Portugal star is on 965 goals as it stands.

Messi's goals by club

Messi's 899th goal came for Miami earlier in March, when he netted in a 2-1 win over D.C. United in MLS.

Since Messi joined Miami in 2023, he has scored 81 times for the Herons.

However, before his American swansong, it was of course at Barcelona that Messi made his name.

He scored a club-record 672 goals for Barca across all competitions,

After leaving Barca in 2021, Messi netted 32 times for Paris Saint-Germain across his two years in the French capital.

And finally, 115 of Messi's goals have come on the international stage.

Messi has played 1,142 competitive matches, meaning he averages 0.7 goals per game.

Messi's goals by competition

With 26 goals for Argentina at the World Cup, Messi is the highest-scoring player in the history of the competition, and he will be aiming to extend that record when he spearheads La Albiceleste's title defence in the summer.

The 38-year-old has scored 14 Copa America goals, too, which is a tally bettered by only four players: Severino Varela (15), Teodoro Fernandez (15), Zizinho (17) and Norberto Mendez (17).

Messi is also the record holder in LaLiga, with his 474 goals in 520 games the best tally in the history of Spain's top tier. He averaged a goal every 88 minutes in the competition during his time at Barca.

Only Ronaldo (140) has scored more Champions League goals than Messi, who managed 129 in 163 appearances. He netted 120 times in the competition for the Blaugrana, and nine goals for PSG.

It is fair to say PSG did not see the best of Messi. He managed 22 goals in 58 Ligue 1 games, scoring every 227 minutes on average.

In MLS, he has scored 60 times in 65 matches, with a minutes per goal ratio of 89.3.

The remaining 90 of his career goals have come across other competitions.

Messi's goals: The breakdown

Messi has netted 724 goals from inside the area, while 176 have come from outside of the 18-yard box.

He has scored 112 penalties, while he has found the back of the net 70 times directly from free-kicks.

Of course, the vast majority of his goals (756) have come from his immaculate left foot, though he has still netted 111 with his right, and 30 have come from his head. "Other" body parts are responsible for three of his goals.

Who are Messi's favourite opponents?

Sevilla are the team to have been given the Messi treatment most often – he has scored 25 times against the Andalusian club.

He has tallied up 24 goals against Athletic Club, 23 against Atletico Madrid, 18 against Valencia and 17 against Barca's rivals Real Madrid.

Messi's goal against Nashville on Wednesday, meanwhile, was his 16th in 12 games against them.

Who has set Messi up the most?

Luis Suarez, Messi's club-mate at Miami and formerly at Barca, has laid up a staggering 61 goals for his close friend. Is it any surprise they get along together so well?

Dani Alves teed up Messi 42 times, while Andres Iniesta provided him with 37 assists. Jordi Alba, who retired last year after helping Miami win their maiden MLS Cup crown, created 35 goals for Messi, ahead of Xavi's 31.

Neymar, who formed a fearsome trio alongside Suarez and Messi at Barca, set up 26 of the Argentine's goals.
