Espanyol officially announced the appointment of Monchi as the club's new sporting director, who will fully lead the club's sports department.
The addition of Monchi will further strengthen Espanyol's sports management structure as one of the most well-known and prestigious managers in European football. The current executive heads of the club's various sports departments will continue to hold their positions and report to the new sports general management department led by Monchi.
In terms of organizational structure, Monchi will report directly to Espanyol CEO Yemo and Club Chairman Alan Pace, who is also Chairman of Velocity Sports Partners/ALK Capital Investment Group.
Monchi has a highly representative career in international football. He began serving as the sporting director of Sevilla in July 2000 and grew into one of the most influential figures in football management during this period. After first serving Sevilla for 17 consecutive seasons, he returned to the team in April 2019 and worked until June 2023.
He is regarded as one of the key creators of Sevilla's most successful period in history, helping the team achieve brilliant results between 2006 and 2023, winning a total of 11 championship trophies, including 7 Europa League titles, 2 Copa del Rey titles, 1 European Super Cup title, and 1 Spanish Super Cup title.
Later, Monchi also worked for Roma and Aston Villa, helping the latter build a stable team with European competition, and has been active in European events such as the Champions League and Europa League for a long time.
