The 2026 Finalissima between Spain and Argentina Called Off! The match was originally scheduled for March 28th.

Official Announcement

UEFA officially announced that the 2026 Finalissima, originally scheduled for March 28th Beijing time, has been cancelled. The match was supposed to feature Spain, the winners of UEFA Euro 2024, against Argentina, the champions of the 2024 Copa América.

 The Announcement

Following extensive discussions between UEFA and the Qatari tournament organizers, it was announced today that: Due to the current political situation in the region, the Finalissima – originally set to take place in Qatar on March 27th – cannot be held as scheduled.

UEFA and the organizers express deep regret. Due to objective environmental and timing constraints, the two teams were unable to compete for this prestigious intercontinental trophy in Doha. Qatar has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to host world-class international events with world-class venues.

UEFA extends sincere gratitude to the Qatari organizing committee and relevant authorities for their efforts in hosting this match, and firmly believes the region will soon restore peace.

The Finalissima is a collaboration between UEFA and CONMEBOL, bringing together the European and American champions to showcase the highest level of international football. In 2022, the World Cup champions Argentina defeated Italy 3-0 at Wembley Stadium in London to win the inaugural edition.

To save this crucial showdown, UEFA actively sought alternative solutions in an extremely short timeframe. Despite the immense challenges of organizing such a high-stakes match, none of the options received Argentina's approval.

The Failed Alternatives

- Option 1: Keep the original date at the Bernabéu Stadium, with 50% of tickets allocated to each team's fans. Approved by the venue but rejected by Argentina.

- Option 2: Convert the Finalissima into a two-legged tie. First leg in Madrid on March 27th, second leg in Buenos Aires at a date between the 2026 European and Copa América tournaments. 50% ticket allocation agreed, but rejected.

- Option 3: Find a neutral venue in Europe, with the match proceeding as originally planned on March 27th, or rescheduled to March 30th. Rejected as well.

Argentina proposed holding the match after the World Cup, but Spain had no available schedule, making this impossible. While Argentina was willing to participate as late as March 31st, this date could not be enforced.

Conclusion: UEFA regrets to announce that the 2026 Finalissima is cancelled.

UEFA expresses its gratitude to Real Madrid, the Qatari organizing committee, and relevant departments for their support in preparing for the tournament. Real Madrid, in particular, responded positively in an extremely short timeframe. Thank you also to the RFEF (Royal Spanish Football Federation) for their flexibility with all proposed solutions throughout the process.
