On this day in 2005 - Crowd flares at the Milan derby created one of the most iconic images
Internazionale's Champions League quarter-final against their city rivals Milan was abandoned on this day in 2005 amid violent scenes.
In the first leg Milan, as home team, won 2-0 with goals from Stam and Shevchenko. However Shevchenko put Milan 1-0 up on the 30 minute mark in the 'return' leg to all but guarantee their passage into a second final in three years but the drama wasn't to end there.
Cambiasso thought he'd given his side a chance in the 72nd minute with a headed goal but it was disallowed for a push and after showing dissent to the referee he was booked.
That moment sparked angry Inter fans to set off flares and them, along with plastic bottles and even umbrellas onto the pitch behind Dida's goal.
As chaos rained down from the stands ref Markus Merk delayed play for 20 minutes. The delay birthed one of the most infamous pictures in football as Rui Costa and Marco Materazzi stood, the defender leaning on his opponents shoulder, watching the mayhem.

On this day in 1948 - World Cup-winning manager Marcello Lippi was born
On 12 April 1948, World Cup-winning manager Marcello Lippi was born in Viareggio, Italy. After a lengthy and distinguished career as a player in Serie A, he made his real mark as a manager, winning five Scudettos and one Champions League title with Juventus before taking the Italian national team to World Cup victory in 2006.
In 2004, the Italian Football Federation appointed Lippi as manager of the national team, replacing Giovanni Trappatoni.
He helmed the Azzurri to the 2006 World Cup title in Germany and retired three days later, handing the reins over to Livorno manager Roberto Donadoni. But after a disappointing Euro 2008 performance, the Azzurri sacked Donadoni and re-appointed Lippi, who retired again after Italy failed to get out of the group stage at the 2010 World Cup.
On this day in 1992 - Man Utd won their first League Cup
On 12 April 1992, Manchester United defeated Nottingham Forest in the League Cup Final. It was the first League Cup for the club and the first piece of silverware for Ryan Giggs, who later became the most decorated British player in history.
Played before a crowd of almost 77,000 at Wembley Stadium, it was closely-fought affair, with Giggs providing the assist for the day's only goal, scored in the 14th minute by United forward Brian McClair.
It was only the third domestic trophy for manager Alex Ferguson, after the 1990 FA Cup and the 1990 FA Charity Shield (the latter shared with Liverpool), but he had also won the Cup Winners' Cup and the UEFA Super Cup in 1991.

I love this derby.A great city with two of the best clubs in the world. Milan represents the Milanese pride, also because they have lots of homegrown youth players playing a lot throughout their history. Inter is a bit classier and represents the international side of the city. There was time when Inter used to Rule Europe. I'm more Interista myself than milanese, but I have deep respect for both clubs. There was a time when people care more about the Milan Derby than the El Clasico. The fire were ofcourse because of Rivalry between them but ya Rivals, not enemy.

It is a deserved win, the team played well and the return tie is wide open", stated the forward. In the wake of his brace against Bayern Munich, Cristiano Ronaldo had become the first player to have racked up 100 goals in European competitions. The Portuguese forward had notched 97 times in the Champions League by that time, once in the competition's group stage and twice in the UEFA Super Cup. Coming in behind Ronaldo in these rankings are Lionel Messi (97 goals) and Raúl (76). at that time of writing. As for the teams for whom he has struck these goals, 84 of Ronaldo's strikes have come during his time at Real Madrid, with the remaining 16 having been scored during his spell at Manchester United. He had made 85 European appearances for Madrid, giving him an average of nearly a goal a game. His goalscoring exploits have seen him crowned the Champions League's leading goalscorer.

Absolutely good players who were often overlooked because of how massively good others were in that time. Rui Costa easily >>>>>> 99% of the hyped midfielders today. RUI COSTA 💓Most underrated no.10 ...one of the best playmakers ever . Unfortunately they don't make such player's nowadays. #GOLDEN ERA OF FOOTBALL

Happy Birthday to one of the most successful managers of all time. In 2007, The Times included him on its list of the top 50 managers of all time. Throughout his career as a manager he won one World Cup title, five Serie Atitles, three Chinese Super League titles, one Coppa Italia, one Chinese FA Cup, four Italian Supercups, one UEFA Champions League, one AFC Champions League, one UEFA Supercup and one Intercontinental Cup. He is the first and to date the only coach to win both the UEFA Champions League and the AFC Champions League. He was named the world's best football manager by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) both in 1996 and 1998, and world's best National coach in 2006. He is the first coach to have won the most prestigious international competitions both for clubs in different continents, and for national teams (the UEFA Champions Leagueand the Intercontinental Cup in 1996 with Juventus; the AFC Champions League in 2013 with Guangzhou; and the FIFA World Cup in 2006 with Italy).

the moral truth, Messi and ronaldo both of them are out there playing football and earning money, building hotels and making preparation for their family and unborn generation. But some stupid fans never thought of their own life and their children life. some have been watching all Ronaldo and Messi matches since 2009 and still arguing on who is the best player. Please think about your life first, children, your generation to come and start the preparation now. stop argument on who is the best, they both are earning millions. Note Ronaldo will soon retire and keep enjoying what he has accomplished during his career. with ronaldo and messi argument please tell me what you've achieved? messi is a talented player, as a football fan, keep working on your talent. Ronaldo is a hard working man, as a football fan be serious and work hard to achieve your goals in life. my opinion.
