Paris Saint-Germain were stunned by a 1-0 defeat to Botafogo in the FIFA Club World Cup (CWC), ending their six-game winning run in all competitions.
Match Report
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who assisted both of PSG’s opening two goals in their victory against Atletico Madrid last time out, was causing problems for his opponents again in the early stages. The tricky winger cut inside before curling towards the far corner, only for John Victor to keep it out. He had another shot with his left foot moments later in a similar position, but dragged it just wide.
Botafogo looked a threat on the break though as Artur tested Gianluigi Donnarumma from distance, before the Brazilians shocked the world by taking a HT lead.

Another counter found Igor Jesus on the edge of the box, and filled with confidence after netting against Seattle Sounders last time out, he fired towards goal, with a deflection leaving Donnarumma helpless as the ball rolled into the bottom corner. It was the first goal PSG have conceded in four matches.
Both teams missed great chances at the start of the second half, as Lucas Beraldo’s point-blank header was well-saved by John, before Jefferson Savarino directed his own header straight into Donnarumma’s grateful arms in a promising position.
PSG unsurprisingly took control though and Bradley Barcola thought he levelled proceedings when he curled into the top corner, but he was offside.

Despite their pressure, the Parisians managed just one effort on target in the second half, and could not find an equaliser as Botafogo recorded a fifth successive victory across all competitions, and one of the most famous in their history. The result leaves Group B on a knife edge going into the final round of grroup games with Botafogo leading European giants PSG and Atlético Madrid.
