Real Madrid have signed three of the five most expensive left-backs in history

With the acquisition of Ferland Mendy from Lyon for 48 million euros, plus a potential 5m euros in add-ons, Real Madrid have now signed three of history's five most expensive left-backs.

Benjamin Mendy is the most expensive at 58m euros and Luka Shaw comes in third at 38m euros, but Los Blancos signed the other two in the top five by paying 30m euros to Benfica for Fabio Coentrao in 2011 and 26m euros to Atletico Madrid for Theo Hernandez in 2017.

Of course, they've also enjoyed Roberto Carlos and Marcelo, two of the best left-backs in history, so it's safe to say that this is a position of great prestige at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.
